King Vortigern chose Dinas Emrys as the location to build his castle. When the castle walls began falling down, King Vortigern sought help from Myrddin Emrys – Merlin, the wizard. Merlin told of two dragons in a secret lake beneath the hill, locked in combat causing the castle to weaken. The Red Dragon prevailed and has been celebrated in Wales ever since.
